Mod Class Cars Shine At National Road Autocross

WILEY FORD, WV – Chesapeake PCA team captain Dennis Howard, from Eldersburg, MD, said follow me, put the team on his back and avenged last year’s loss to the Steel Town Corvette team in the Porsche/Corvette Shoot Out to kick off the 2005 National Road Weekend.

s now familiar yellow 996 TT captured the Shoot Out Eliminator crown on raw time and he assembled a formidable team of favorably classified Porsches to take the third annual title. Pittsburgh’s Keith Baxter repeated his performance as the best eliminator Corvette but couldn’t stop the panzer parade from sweeping the Friday night kick-off event.

The rest of the weekend at Cumberland Regional Airport belonged to a growing group of modified class cars competing for FTD (Fast Time of the Day) in the second leg of the six event 2005 Miller Lite Cumberland Autocross Series.

On Saturday, John Felten became the first local driver to capture the top spot at a Cumberland Airport autocross in his B Modified Reynard. The flying Panzers of Porsche drivers Howard, Derek Schwarz (Baltimore, MD) and Dan Whiteman (Bridgeport, WV) followed, with Matt Felten grabbing fifth fastest time in the family formula car.

Sunday dawned warm and sunny, perfect conditions for two-time National SCCA D Modified Champion Larry Shauf (Hollidaysburg, PA) to scorch the tarmac with at 41.963 pass. Chuck Sieber
s E Mod Lotus trailed by 1.8 seconds, followed by Randy Pearson (Pittsburgh, PA) in a Honda S2000, John Felten and the thundering B Prepared class Corvette of Dave Stoner (Pittsburgh).

Double weekend winners in contested classes included Rob Harris (SS Corvette), Tim Eisel (BS Porsche 968), Meg Ellis (CS Miata), Alan Pozner (DS Acura), Ned Barefoot (BSP Corvette), Mark Boggs (CSP Porsche 914), Tracey McCabe (ESP Trans Am), Stoner (BP Corvette), Noel Hall (AM Porsche 944 S2), John Felten (BM Reynard) and Jeff Schllifka (HS Chevy S-10).

Other local drivers winning classes included Tom Evans (FS Firebird), John Leyh (GS Corrado), Scott Pfeiffer (DM Porsche 914) and Karl Loper (SM Camaro).

Local Top 25 finishers on Saturday included John and Matt Felten and Greg Honeycutt (BM Reynard).
